A full strength, full flavored pipe tobacco. kind of a more interesting cigar flavour with a peppery finish. On first opening your pouch or tin, it smells like chocolate with a little bit of soap in it. With experience of some other Samuel Gawiths strong flakes, Id expected something like that - full taste, slow burning and really satisfying amount of nicotin that would come through my palate and nostrils. I worry about their mental and physical well-being. I'd give it three stars except for the burn and slight bite. Ho-hum. I acquired a small sample of this (3 large bowls) from an estate tin dated April 2006. At initial fire this tobacco crowns up more than anything I've seen but it tamps down easily at second light.If you don't break it up too much in rubbing out it is a very slow, smoldering smoke. The aroma is of "Lemon Grass". Unlike, say, GH Dark Flake, Bracken Flake is darker, earthy, lacking the brighter vegetal notes of DF, yet darkly sweet (i.e., molasses/caramel-like). Please confirm that you are over the age of 18 to continue. I wish the flakes came unbroken, because the larger pieces, folded like whole flake, smoke better than the smaller pieces. Even after drying this out it had no real significant taste,though it did smell like an out house that had caught on fire. Takes at least two charring lights to get it burning evenly and well. Now, for breaking it apart and packing into the pipe. It's strong, yes and not for the faint of heart. On first light you get an immediate creamy smoke with a spicy sourish taste coupled with a light fruity/vanilla/musk undertones that come from the tonquin topping. It might have been many years ago, when I enjoyed Gitanes cigarettes (the ones with the black tobacco). I rolled it around my tongue and exhaled through my nose. I found this flake to be dark and moist, and quite pungent in the tin, much like 1792 and Full Virginia Flake. The Virginias build in depth and character while the Kentucky slowly builds and begins to assert dominance. An excellent Virginia & Latakia blend with a pleasant rum flavor. I have tried Petertson's Irish Flake and that is what this reminds me of. It is rich and earthy and leaves me with a tad bit of sweetness. I detect the fruitiness in the topping when smelling the flake which is similar to cherry as well as anise.

A good deal darker (in looks and taste) and fuller than Rum Flake, I find it equally as sweet, but in a different way, and as strong or stronger than Rum Flake as well. $ 130.95 inc. GST Less tonka and a more subtle blend in the topping, the tobacco is a little less potent and it's a little less sweet. I'd compare it to 1792, just in terms of the amount of top-note.
